Black Working on the Oscillating Secondary Mirror
The telescope's main mirror focused light up to this secondary mirror which oscillated. The result was a telescope that could look back and forth at two different places - one was the object of interest, and the other would be an area of deep space. Comparing the two allowed the researchers to cancel out external noise. This was called 'chopping'. There's more to it but it gets complicated...
