Cypress Freeway - Press Area
This was the area where the press received their briefings during the rescue effort. 53 people died in the collapse. Several survivors were actually pulled from the small voids between the two decks. Buck Helms was the last, after being trapped for almost two weeks, but he eventually died of massive organ failure. This was my introduction to a new discipline called USAR - Urban Search And Rescue. I eventually became very active as a rescue specialist and communications tech in the NASA DART team and in FEMA's California Task Force-3. USAR teams specialize in rescues that are too complex for the average fire department. |
