S.F. / Oakland Bay Bridge Damage

One footing of the Bay Bridge was knocked loose from its foundation during the Loma Prieta Earthquake and a portion shifted, causing a section of the upper deck to collapse. I took this picture while the bridge was separated into two halves for repair.  You can see both decks.

I drove all the way from KTVU with a California Highway Patrol escort, traveling in the wrong direction on the freeways. We were the only two vehicles since the entire area was closed. When you go the wrong way on a freeway you see red reflectors instead of white. It was a very eerie feeling. The full extent of the damage to the bridge and the highway system was still not known and after shocks were common.
