| Installing a Detector The German Team from the Max Planck Institute installs their detector, FIFI, on the business end of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory's telescope. These detectors were all cooled with liquid nitrogen and liquid helium in double, or even triple dewars. The temperature inside the detector could be as low as 0.2 degrees Kelvin - that's 0.2 degrees above absolute zero. A detector like this could see the residual heat from a snuffed-out match head on the surface of the moon as it cooled off. |
