The Perfect Storm
This cruise ship's main deck was higher than our radar platform. We both sailed out into the Mediterranean Sea on the same day. We sailed into the wildest seas I have ever seen, with waves that were close to 100 feet from crest to trough. We took several 56 degree rolls during that storm. It's easier to walk on the bulkhead than the deck at that angle. Destroyers do not recover from rolls much greater that that. They simply turn over and sink. We made it, but this ship almost didn't. The forward compartment was crushed like an egg by a huge towering sea, killing several people.
