These machine were used extensively by the German military to encrypt their secret communications during WWII. Little did they realize that the British and Americans had finally broken their codes towards the end of the war.

This 3-rotor Enigma cipher machine may well be the one that was stolen from Bletchley Park. They had several Enigma's but not too many three-rotor models.
