 | Kuiper Airborne Observatory The KAO looks mighty nice in the morning sun, doesn't it? This runway was built by NASA as an emergency Shuttle landing strip back when they planned to launch polar orbiting missions from Vandenburg Air Base. Once Vandenburg was cancelled as a Shuttle launch facility, this runway was abandoned. If it gets two flight a week, it's a busy week.
